Europe’s largest contemporary art centre and sustainability

With 22.000 m2 of raw and atypical space and 720.000 visitors per year, Palais de Tokyo is Europe’s largest contemporary art centre. The centre is pursuing a transition to more sustainable ways of working and aspires to be a reference for responsible exhibition-making. They focus on cultural mediation and programs for emerging artists. Also, the Palais follows a sustainable strategy in terms of recycling and reusable exhibition walls.

Hamo: a welcoming and ecological venue

In 2023 the Palais followed through on its policy of inclusion and opened ‘hamo’: a venue specifically for the promotion of cultural mediation open to all audiences. Offering more than 500 m² of workshop meeting spaces, it was designed as a village around the exhibitions. The venue features a welcoming atmosphere due to among others the use of ecological materials.

Use of recyclable PET Felt materials

At hamo, the educational and humanistic activities take place in architectural, round-shaped units called ‘Cabanes’. In line with the sustainable aspirations of the Palais de Tokyo, ReFelt’s recyclable PET Felt materials have been used. The interior as well as the exterior of the Cabanes is covered with multiple variants of Round PET Felt Wall Shingles.
