FAQ

Welcome to ReFelt’s FAQ section. Here you will some of the most common questions and answers. If you are looking for ways to process and mount PET Felt panels, head to ReFelt’s Instructions page.

1. What is PET Felt?

PET Felt is made of recycled plastic, mostly plastic bottles. The collected plastic is first cleaned, then finely ground and processed into a fibre. From these fibres are made mats, which are then felted. That felt is heated and pressed into a panel. From these panels, you can make any type of product.

On the website of De Vorm you can read more about how PET Felt is being made.

Since PET Felt is made of plastic bottles, it has the following properties:

  • Easy to process
  • Impact-resistant
  • Easily recyclable after being used
2. Is PET Felt certified?

All of our PET Felt panels and products have a B1 Fire rating. We also have a 345-2003 ISO Certification and a Peutz Report.

3. Is PET Felt safe?

PET Felt is incredibly versatile, flexible, and safe. It’s lightweight and easy to process. There are no dangerous emissions coming out of the material. PET Felt also has a B1 Fire rating, meaning that it is difficult to be set on fire.

4. Do the panels have an adhesive layer?

No, they do not.

5. Is PET Felt suitable as a floor?

No, since the chance of damaging the material is too big.

6. Is it possible to get custom-shaped PET Felt products?

Of course, we can make any shape and design. Get in touch with us for a custom-made PET Felt product.

7. How can you install PET Felt?

You can read our Installation manual. The general tips are:

  • PET Felt panels have a front and a backside. That’s because the fibres are differently oriented. Always lay out the panels before you mount them.
  • To install the panels, we recommend using a polymer adhesive sealant, such as Bison Poly Max High Track. The advantage of using this one is that it does not immediately get hard, so you can still make adjustments while mounting. The kit is not included with the panels, but it can be found at any construction materials store.
  • PET Felt panels can also be mounted with a tackler and headless nails. The nails can barely be noticed, you can see small holes only from really close.
8. Does ReFelt provide mounting material or other tools needed?

No, but you can find suitable ones at any construction materials store.

9. Can ReFelt help with the installation?

No, ReFelt does not install any PET Felt. We advise you to get in touch with an interior builder in your area.

10. Can ReFelt precut the panels?

Of course. Get in touch with us about that.

11. How do I clean PET Felt?

PET Felt is easy to clean and maintain. Most stains can be removed with plenty of water. Let the water drip through and blot the stain with a dry cloth. Never rub the PET Felt, as it can damage the material. Stubborn stains can be removed with special cleaning agents such as James Cleaning Set.

12. How resistant are PET Felt products to impact and wear?

Since PET Felt is made of recycled plastic bottles, it can withstand a lot. PET Felt is also impact resistant. However, the material should still be handled with care, so do not place it somewhere humid or dirty, as this will make it wear out quickly.

20. Can PET Felt products isolate sound?

Our products are made to absorb and dampen sound so that its reflections within a space can be significantly reduced. However, PET Felt cannot fully block sound.

21. Where can you have Acoustic PET Felt panels installed?

Any space needs good acoustics — restaurants, hotels, (home) offices, meeting rooms, etc. Having a wall and/or ceiling, which absorbs sounds, can improve everyone’s experience and well-being. You can theoretically install PET Felt on any wall. If you are not sure, contact us or find an interior builder, who can assist you.

22. What is the best acoustic solution for my situation?

As every room and situation is different, we recommend getting in touch with an Acoustics expert. The general rule states that a minimum of ⅓ of the wall needs to be covered to improve the acoustics.

23. What is NRC?

NRC stands for Noise Reduction Coefficient. It is determined by measurements on the frequencies of 250 Hz, 500 Hz, 1000 Hz and 2000 Hz. An NRC value of 0 corresponds to a complete reflection of sound. At the other end of the scale, we speak of complete absorption of the sound, in this case, the NRC value is 1.

You can read more about NRC and acoustics in the e-book ReFelt has created.
